Last Friday was our first Visual Communications lesson and it was indeed an eye-opener and definitely an interesting four hours of class.
First up, we were given an overview of what Visual Communications is about as well as the various things that we would be doing for the year. This includes not only drawing but also using programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS6 and Adobe DreamWeaver.
What are we waiting for? Its time for drawing!
Identifying shapes was our first task.
As shown above, drawing Po (from Kungfu Panda) wasn't exactly a walk in the park for me. Being a person who has never failed to fail art in school ,what really helped was identifying the basic shapes of Po and then defining the lines to form a better picture.
I drew the second mannequin and indeed whatever we have learnt thus far was important considering the various shapes in a mannequin. Getting the details right was not an easy task and concentration was definitely crucial.
Forging a signature may seem like an easy feat. However, it's the complete opposite! Paying attention to the lines and curves was the only way to do a perfectly forged signature.
Drawing a rose upside down combined both the knowledge of drawing the basic shapes and paying attention to lines and curves. It took me quite some time and focus to get the rose done.
Using a pencil as a measuring stick and drawing the puppy in proportion was challenging and required lots of attention.
As our last activity, we worked in pairs and drew each other. It was hilarious to be observed with such keen eyes by my partner and a little awkward. This must be the life for real-life models in art classes!
It was difficult to get the details right about my partner.
All in all, the first Visual Communications class was interesting and it really required my utmost concentration and time. We learnt how negative spaces are used in drawings as logos to make it more interesting and visually-appealing. Though, I'm not really a good artist, I'm going to try my best and put in the effort and have a positive mindset that 'impossible is nothing'! :)
